Immaculate Conception School

May Queens

 

The May Processions at Immaculate Conception were so very special.  We would procession out of the school yard,

down Sprague Street, to Price Street, to Ardleigh Street into

the front of the Upper Church.  The procession route would

be crowded with parents, parishioners and other bystanders.

The pomp and the pageantry!   The highpoint would be the

crowning of the Blessed Mother, the patroness of our parish,

by the May Queen as we sang the beautiful hymn,

"Immaculate Mary".

 

 

Being the May Queen was a special honor bestowed

on a lucky 8th Grade girl.  At some point in the 1960s, the tradition of May Queen was changed so that the honor was bestowed on a girl in the 2nd Grade.  Being the May Queen was an honor she would surely remember her entire life!
