.....  Sad News  .....

By now, you probably have heard that our beloved Immaculate Conception is being closed by the Archdiocese as part of a restructuring effort of the Catholic Church in the northwestern part of the city.  St. Francis of Assisi is also being closed, so St. Vincent de Paul will be the sole church serving the Catholic community in Germantown.  The reality is, the Catholic Church has been in decline in Germantown for decades and the Archdiocese has been subsidizing all of these Germantown churches since the 1980s.  IC, itself, was down to 250 families, a number that was projected to continue to decline and Sunday Mass attendance was down to around 100.   Something had to give...  But, the stark facts and reality doesn't lessen the pain we all feel at the closing of our beloved Immaculate Conception.  It is like the passing of a beloved friend, one that has made such an impact in our lives and one that we will never forget.  They may close our beloved Immaculate Conception, but they can never close the wonderful memories we have of this grand old parish.   The Closing Mass will be Sunday, June 24 at 11:00am.  Light refreshments will follow.   Please plan to come out to say a fond farewell to the parish that meant so much to all of us.  Let us fill that majestic old church one last time, like we did back in the day, as we sadly bid our final farewell to our beloved friend, Immaculate Conception.

MISSION STATEMENT

Friends of Immaculate  is a loosely based group of folks that have some connection to, or just an interest in, Immaculate Conception Parish in the East Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, past or present. The Friends of Immaculate website is a vehicle for reconnecting and remembering our days in that grand old parish and/or in that great old neighborhood of Germantown. It is a means for reconnecting with classmates, friends and neighbors from the old neighborhood, and even to make new friends. The website also serves to reconnect us to the parish of today, the current goings-on and to events such as fundraisers, homecomings and reunions. Though our core roots are with this wonderful old parish, we equally welcome those who may not be connected to the parish in any way but have an interest and love of the Germantown of old.

Enjoy!
